There are 4 types of pressure measurement also known as pressure Datum. The datum means what the pressures reference point is.
The 4 Types of Pressure Measurement or Pressure Datum are
- Gauge
- Absolute
- Sealed Gauge
- Differential
For applications that required a high IP rating and need to be sealed from the environment for protection, for example submersion in water, or potted for vibration protection Absolute and Sealed gauge would be used because they do not need to be exposed to atmospheric pressure to behave correctly
If a Gauge sensor was encapsulated and sealed from the atmospheric pressure then its output characteristics will be affected resulting in an inaccurate sensor.
Examples and Definition of the Types of pressure measurement
Type | Examples | Definition |
Sealed Gauge | -Encapsulated sensors -High IP Ratings -High Vibration environments -Wash down environments -Automotive -Rugged environments | Referenced on manufacture in a sealed chamber to 1 Bars |
Absolute | -Barometric pressure monitoring -Weather Stations -Vacuum -Pressurised room | Referenced to a perfect vacuum e.g. Space |
Gauge | -Car Tyres -Hydraulics -Mechanical -No requirement to completely seal the sensor | Referenced to atmospheric pressure |
Differential | -HVAC -Clean Room -Filters and Pumps | the difference between 2 pressure readings |
